Maalhos islanders allege councillors involved in robbery of safe with Rf100 ...

Islanders of Maalhos in Alif Alif Atoll have alleged that the island’s councillors took Rf100,000 (US$6,485) from the office safe last week.

“It could not have happened without the knowledge of the councilors, almost all the islanders believe that one cannot just go past security and reach the safe so easily and steal it,” an islander told Minivan News today on the condition of anonymity.

“The culprits have sawed the steel rods placed behind the window and entered council office.”

He alleged that it was “obvious” that the councilors were behind the robbery.

“That’s how everyone tells it when they speak of the incident,” he said, adding that police were yet to determine who was involved.

“A police team arrived on this island the very next day but they could not figure out who it was and they left, no arrests were made,” he said.

A police media official told Minivan News that the incident was reported to police on Wednesday afternoon last week.

“A police team was sent to the island for investigation, so far no one has been arrested in connection with the case,” he confirmed.

Maalhos Councillors Ahmed Rashid however dismissed the islanders’ speculation.

“I can’t believe that any councillors would have done it,” he said, adding that three out of the five councillors were not in the island at the time of the robbery.

However, he added, there “might be fingerprints” of the councillors on both the safe and the cash in it as they had “counted the money the night before and gave it to an administrative staff.”

Rashid noted that “a number of visitors” were also in the island on the night of the robbery.

He explained that the Rf100,000 in cash was raised from the sale of coconuts and rent collected from plots leased out in the island.

The money was to be used to manage the island’s powerhouse, he said.

When you buy anything from Toyota, you know that it will be reliable and hold its resale value longer than most brands.  For someone looking for an 8-passenger minivan, those are two factors that merit strong consideration.  The CE-8 is the second of six trim levels, and the first of three 8-passenger trim levels. The 2010 Sienna CE-8 has a 3.5 liter V-6 engine that produces 266 horsepower.  It has 16-inch steel wheels, front-wheel drive, and and a 5-speed automatic transmission.  It is rated at 17 mpg in the city and 23 mpg on the highway.  When not loaded with people or cargo, it goes from zero to sixty in around eight seconds.

The CE-8 comes with a tilt-telescope steering wheel, captain chair front seats, split-folding second and third row seats, cloth upholstery, full power accessories, sliding rear doors, and front and rear air conditioning.  The audio system has 6 speakers, an AM/FM radio, a CD/MP3 player, and an audio jack.  There are options to turn this vehicle into a luxury van as you go up in trim levels.

The Sienna also comes with side front airbags, side curtain airbags for the second and third row, anti-lock brakes, stability control, and traction control.  In government testing, the Sienna got a perfect 5 stars out of 5 in all side and front impact tests except for 4 stars in front impact driver protection.

Conclusions and driver feedback:

The cabin is very nice.  Even in the lower trim levels, the materials are high-quality and the design is attractive and practical.  The seats are very comfortable, and there is a lot of cabin space.  Headroom, legroom, and elbow room are plentiful in all of the seats.  The maximum cargo capacity is 149 cubic feet.

The cabin is tweaked for passenger comfort.  Since it is designed for seven passengers and one driver, I guess “majority rules” is appropriate here.  The steering has a bit of a lag to it, and there is plenty of body roll in corners and curves.  The upside is that the ride is almost a luxury car ride.  Acceleration is not that great, but there is enough power for very smooth operation at highway speeds.

All in all, this vehicle isn’t splashy and doesn’t do anything better than the competition, but it does everything well.  If you obsess on any single component as the deal-maker or deal-breaker, you might not like the Sienna.  That being said, we have yet to see a better “total package” in its class.
