Roundtable: SDSU's President Faces Challenges

California's system of higher education which was designed to maintain high economic standards and remain accessible to low income student system hiking its fees substantially. At the same time, the board of trustees announced this week that they agreed to a new contract with the new president of SDSU, Elliot Hirschman, that pays him a salary $100,000 hire than his predecessors. How are you dealing with the hike? What's your reaction to the board's decision to boost the president's salary so substantially at the same time? 1-888-895-5727 is our number here. Kyla, start us off with the specifics. How much are the fees gonna go up?

CALVERT: This week, the board of trustees voted to raise tuition by 12% this fall. So at San Diego state, two semesters or one year of school, students will be paying more than $6,500 for the year. And that's up -- I did the math a little earlier this week, and I think that's up -- it's almost double from four years ago, what they were paying in the fall of 2007.

CALVERT: Well, I think that the students in general are just feeling squeezed. Of and in general, they said that about a third of the revenue from tuition is held and reserved for financial aid. So they tried to sort of buffer lower income families from that increase. But I think we've seen more and more, especially locally, more people trying to get their first two years of college done at the community colleges because it's cheaper, and that creates a squeeze there as well.

The Director of Programs Abroad (PAO) has the primary functional responsibility for the strategic planning, management, and development of program and advising services and activities for UC San Diego's Programs Abroad Office. Education abroad advising includes, but is not limited to: study, work, intern, research, volunteer, and service learning in another country. Foresee policy and procedure changes due to federal regulations and an ever-changing international academic community and provide innovative new programs and policies for the educational process involving programs abroad. Initiates program planning and problem solving with faculty, academic departments, administrators, students and staff at all levels of UC San Diego.

Manages the Education Abroad Program (EAP) for UC San Diego in collaboration with the UC Office of the Education Abroad Program (UOEAP), UCSD’s Opportunities Abroad Program (OAP) and UCSD’s Global Seminars (GS). Ensures overall program quality and development of appropriate University-wide and UC San Diego policies and procedures. Represents UC San Diego Programs Abroad to campus and system-wide offices and committees. Responsible for management functions including safety and security issues, health and wellness issues, student and program advocacy, policy development, program development, and scholarship administration. Provides consultative services on a broad spectrum of matters relevant to education abroad, student development, international educational exchange. Provides leadership in strategic planning and development of services in support of the mission of the UC San Diego International Center and Programs Abroad. As Associate Director of the International Center, collaborates on center-wide initiatives and acts in place of the Dean/Director of the International Center as needed. Expert knowledge and ability to interpret, help develop and apply policies and procedures of UC's Education Abroad Program, UC San Diego's Opportunities Abroad Program and Global Seminars, the University of California and of UC San Diego.
