Well if you are a regular ocean cruiser to say that river cruising is different is a slight understatement. To point out the obvious the sheer size between the vessels is vast but if you take into consideration economies of scale and the number of people on board the actual amenities and services compare quite well. The average number of guests on a river vessel is 200 which is probably only a tenth of the average cruise ship however these river vessels still offer swimming pools, saunas & hot tubs, sun decks, cabins with balconies, boutiques, library, observation lounge and bars, restaurants with panoramic views, laundry and lifts. So other than the rock climbing wall and ice skating rink not bad at all. a couple of years ago to experience a river cruise on the Viking Sun. We were pleasantly surprised how spacious everything was on board including our cabin and public areas. The vessel is beautifully appointed with modern comfortable furnishings, the staff were friendly and attentive and the food excellent. Above all the calm & relaxing atmosphere goes hand in hand with the gentle glide of the vessel through the water with the majestic landscapes just slipping by. This sort of holiday is not really for party animals but the age group on board was younger than expected, the entertainment was pretty low key but the resident DJ did rock the boat on more than one occasion! River cruising does look expensive at first but when you consider what you get for your money it does equate to excellent value for money. Not only the luxury, service and quality but the inclusion of all your port excursions and knowledgeable tour escort makes the world of difference.
