Black Death Review

This weekend I sat down and watched Black Death which stars Sean Bean one of my favourite actors and is directed by Christopher Smith the top notch director behind the truly memorable horror comedy Severance. Black Death is a tale of medieval necromancy and a bad ass warrior of god who is sent by the Bishop to bring about some Christian justice and the woes and tribulations that fall upon him.

Sean Bean stars as Ulric a church appointed Knight who is sent to a small village during the time of the Black Plague which killed 50% of the population in Europe to find out why they have been left untouched. The church believes it’s the work of Satan and a necromancer and it is Ulric and his crew of ass kickers to seek out the truth and deliver churches justice.

Watching the movie I kept finding myself asking, is this not the exact same story as Season of the Witch which stars Nicolas Cage and Ron Perlman? I wouldn’t know since I missed Season of the Witch. I am a poor man and Nicolas Cage rarely deserves $13 of my pay check. Whether the movies are identical in plot or not one thing is for sure, Black Death despite a strong male lead and a very talented director is a luke warm film at best and mediocre at worst.

The concept is not very original and is extremely disjointed. The characters are about as deep as a puddle and for me the film, its characters and the story lacked in any kind of emotional connection. I found absolutely no connection or draw with the story and frankly if you cannot connect with the story and the characters I have a very hard time being drawn into the film.

Quality wise Black Death is top notch with great production values and reasonable acting but the story, the action sequences and the entire story itself just had me yawning and thinking ‘… been there done that’. Black Death lacks in originality, is highly predictable and at times incredibly rushed and disjointed with an ending that seemed more like an after though then a planned out conclusion. The film had some high points but they are definitely over shadowed by its flaws.

Perhaps I was tired and was not in the right frame of mind for this film but for me Black Death was just another formula movie that lacked imagination and for that reason I would say it’s a rental at best and definitely not worth buying. Netflix currently has it on demand so if you want to see it watch it there but certainly do not run out to buy this movie.

The words to the Ring all around the rosy children's ring game have their origin in English history . The historical period dates back to the Great Plague of London in 1665 (bubonic plague) or even before when the first outbreak of the Plague hit England in the 1300's. The symptoms of the plague included a rosy red rash in the shape of a ring on the skin (Ring about the rosy). Pockets and pouches were filled with sweet smelling herbs ( or posies) which were carried due to the belief that the disease was transmitted by bad smells. The term "Ashes Ashes" refers to the cremation of the dead bodies! The death rate was over 60% and the plague was only halted by the Great Fire of London in 1666 which killed the rats which carried the disease which was transmitting via water sources. The English version of "Ring all around the rosy" replaces Ashes with (A-tishoo, A-tishoo) as violent sneezing was another symptom of the disease. We recommend the following site for comprehensive information regarding the Bubonic Plague. The connection between this Rhyme was made by James Leasor in 1961 in his non-fiction book ' The Plague and the Fire. Some people are sceptical of the plague interpretations of this rhyme, Silver Tiffany Bracelet , many stating that words in the rhyme cannot be found in Middle English. The sceptics must be referring to the later version of the rhyme, possibly with American origins, the English version is "Ring a ring o' rosies" using the Middle English "o" as a shortening of the word "of". The written word " posies" is first mentioned in a poem called 'Prothalamion or A Spousal Verse' by Edmund Spenser (1552-1599). We believe that this addresses the views of the sceptics.
