The tissue issue: How green is Southwest Paper's technology?
Southwest Paper USA may be a start-up with no established product line and no track record.
But the idea for a firm producing premium paper products with the most sustainable, advanced technology has been incubating 15 years — perhaps long enough for that technology to lose some of its cutting edge.
Leonard Sugarman, 79, Southwest Paper’s founder and chief executive, has been looking to get back into the paper products business since bankruptcy forced him out of it in the mid-1990s.
Statler Industries, the firm Sugarman ran nearly 30 years, was eco-friendly in its day, producing facial tissue, toilet paper and paper towels from recycled stock in a plant with relatively low emissions.
Southwest Paper also will bill itself as an eco-friendly enterprise, even though it will rely on electricity-intensive technology that does not allow production from recycled paper.
So the firm will wrap itself in Redding Electric Utility’s green flag.
REU today relies mostly on large dam hydropower and natural gas-fired turbines. The state considers both nonrenewable sources.
But the utility has a large wind power contract and plans to seek more renewable energy, including biogas.
REU can claim up to 65 percent of its portfolio is renewable with the wind power and small hydro, said Pat Keener, energy services manager for REU and economic development liaison who worked with Sugarman and his team.
Tissue with a TAD more fluff
Sugarman has spent much of the past decade and a half researching more up-to-date, energy-sustainable technologies to produce premium facial tissues, toilet paper, napkins and paper towels for corporate brands now lacking them.
He long-ago settled on through-air-dry (TAD) production to fill a market need for major retailers operating in the western United States.
Paper products researchers and manufacturers developed and refined TAD over three decades to produce tissue that’s strong and absorbent yet airy and soft, as customers prefer, according to several trade publications.
Paper tissue goes into production in dripping sheets. Conventional paper machines rely on mechanical presses to squeeze the water out.
But these presses also crush and flatten the paper fibers, making the tissue less fluffy, soft and absorbent.
Crinkling and embossing the tissue once it’s drier restores some of the lost softness and absorbency, according to discussions in trade publications such as Tissue World.
