PHILADELPHIA — It felt like October baseball.

Unfortunately for the Phillies, it felt like those days last fall when the Giants’ pitchers found ways to render them offensively punchless and the San Francisco offense scratched out just enough to put rings on their fingers.

The two best teams in the National League will play again tonight in the rubber match, with the Phillies trying to win their 10th straight series dating back to a late June trip to Seattle.

But Wednesday night proved once again why the defending World Series champions are such a dangerous matchup for Philadelphia’s hopes of getting back to the World Series. The Giants’ pitching can match the Phils and their offense can be more opportunistic in a tight spot. San Francisco improved to 28-13 in one-run games this season and they are a pretty remarkable 45-5 when leading after the seventh inning.

“They are a tough team,” said Hamels, who allowed six hits and two earned runs while striking out six in 7 2/3 innings of work. “I know that they don’t score a lot of runs, but they just keep on battling and fighting to the end.

“You don’t want to let them put up too many runs (with Cain on the mound), because he’ll find a way to beat you.”

It was remarkably similar to the outing that Cain — now 9-6 on the season — had against Hamels and the Phillies during Game 3 of last year’s NLCS. That day, pitching in the bright sunlight of AT&T Park in San Francisco, Cain allowed only two hits and no runs while striking out five in a 3-0 victory that gave the Giants a 2-1 series lead they would never relinquish.

This time, it was much more subtle. Cain only would strike out one Phillie — Dom Brown to close out the fourth — but forced the Phils to hit into a series of harmless grounders and fly outs before departing in the eighth inning.

“His command is a lot better and he had the ball down tonight,” Phillies manager Charlie Manuel said. “He brought it up when he wanted to and he has changed his arm angle. He used to be up higher, but he’s dropped it more to get three-quarters. He’s getting a harder sink on his pitches that way.
