NOT JUST ANYWHERE: Purchases are taxable as usual at theme parks, entertainment complexes, public lodging establishments and airports
MISTAKES: If you realize tax has been wrongfully added to a purchase, take the receipt back to the store and ask for a refund.
EXCHANGES: If you exchange an eligible item bought before the holiday for one bought during the holiday, the retailer should give you a full refund including tax for the first item and no tax should be charged on the one bought during the holiday.
COUPONS, ETC.: If a store marks an eligible item down to keep it under the limit, no tax is charged. But a manufacturers coupon that does the same thing doesnt remove the tax. Thats because the coupon is part of the consideration paid by the manufacturer to the retailer.
RAIN CHECKS: If a rain check is issued during the holiday for an eligible item, its taxable if purchased after the holiday.
LAYAWAYS: Items placed on layaway (set aside for a customer who makes a deposit, agrees to pay the balance of the purchase price over a period of time, and receives the merchandise at the end of the payment period) during the sales tax holiday are exempt from tax. Also, if the final payment on a layaway order of eligible items is made and the merchandise is given to the customer during the holiday period, the items are exempt from tax, regardless of when they were placed on layaway.
INTERNET AND MAIL ORDER: Purchases by both methods are exempt during the holiday.
SPECIFIC ITEMS: Only items specifically made exempt by the Legislature are tax free.
