The Interrogation Room: Diablo III
Ryan Scott, Executive Editor: I'm jealous -- you got to spend a whole day with Diablo III over at Blizzard headquarters last week. And you got some first-hand news about a pretty huge piece of news: an in-game auction house. What was the overall reaction when Blizzard unveiled that to you?
Eric Neigher, Contributing Editor: The auction house announcement kinda came out of nowhere. At the end of an hour-long presentation about the features, characters, etc., of Diablo III , Blizzard Executive Vice President Rob Pardo gave a PowerPoint presentation entirely devoted to this auction house concept. Apparently, this whole idea grew out of the black markets that arose around items, characters, and gold in previous Diablo games. Pardo stated multiple times that the developers added this auction house because "people were going to do it anyway, and this way it's secure." Essentially, it allows players to take in-game items -- everything from magic weapons and armor to gold and common stuff -- and even characters, and sell them to other players for real-world money. Blizzard charges a fee to list items in the auction house (although Pardo stated that players would be able to create a certain number of free listings per week), and takes a percentage of the finalized transaction. But Blizzard will not handle the money itself; unless you want to keep everything within the Blizzard universe (i.e., spend your auction profits on the Blizzard store, or on other Blizzard games), you have to go through a third-party vendor to actually cash out. All of this, needless to say, created some interesting ripples in the press room.
Your wallet's worst nightmare - the new auction interface.
Ryan Scott: Was the reaction generally positive or negative? We've seen other publishers take similar actions in the past; when SOE did this with EverQuest II a few years back, it was with the same "Well, we know it happens, so at least this way it's safe and secure *cough* and gets us more money *cough*" rationale. How do you feel about it? I suppose the big fear, if one exists, is that it legitimizes a pay-for-power mentality...
Eric Neigher: It was a mixed reaction. A couple of the press guys in attendance, in the tradition of the crusading moral defenders of the past, decried the system as a harbinger of economic disaster.
World Of Warcraft Stuff - News

I could see it having some potentially serious ramifications for, say, World of Warcraft. That's a game that definitely shares a lot of the same under-the-table problems with gold farming, account-selling, and the like. Eric Neigher: He discussed maybe

Matt Low (@Matticus) Going on a massive recruiting and rebuilding spree over the weekend. Oh, World of Warcraft, you can be a pain sometimes. Not sure what to do in the games department. I've run out of stuff to play! I beat Black Ops last week!
Interestingly, before our own play session for preview purposes, we saw what happens when you try to play offline (or get knocked offline): you get stuck at the login screen (a la World of Warcraft). The reason? The beta server wasn't online.
I'm currently working on gathering up all of the new Patch 4.2 gray items, because there are some definite awesome ones! Sounds like you'll be busy! How long have you been playing World of Warcraft, anyway? I've been playing WoW for over four years now
Stone Keepers Shard – Item – World of Warcraft | WOW Items
The BoA gear scales depending on your level.
For example,Grand Staff of Jordan, may only give one or two stamina to a level 1, but it would give 103 to a level 80.
Each BoA item is supposed to be equal to a good blue of that level.
Used for buying items off of Wintergrasp Quartermasters.
Stone Guard Mukar – Horde
Knight Dameron – Alliance
Drops off 5-mans when the Wintergrasp buff is up. -Essence of Wintergrasp
These apparently drop off of ANY Boss in the Northrend WotLK Dungeons, as long as your side (Alliance or Horde) has control of Lake Wintergrasp.
note that they do not drop off of raid bosses.
Usually there is 1-3 per boss on normal dungeons, depending on the level
Heroic Dungeon bosses will drop a stack of 4 shards
perhaps im not seeing everything you can redeem these shards for, but basically blizz is offering pvp shoulder/head enchants for doing pve runs. why are they wasting our time with resil instead of crit or agil with the AP? and only jc patterns? how about some other professions? these things arent particularly useful — even the meta-gems — there are so few opportunities to use them. cmon blizz, give us non-jcs some more things on which to use these shards.
You can get this through either PvP (dailies) or PvE (instance runs with Wintergrasp blessing). If you like PvP, then you can use the shards for PvP stuff like gems and shoulder enchants. If you like PvE, you can use the shards for legacy items to ease alt leveling or for the mount.
These are very east to get your hands on once you start running heriocs. So far in the few ive ran im seeing 4 drop per boss…as long as your faction has control of Wintergrasp. You could get the mammoth in a few weeks if your a casual player when running instances.
The reason why almost all of the rewards are PVP based is because you can only obtain the shards is by winning control of Wintergrasp, which is a PVP area. Yea they drop in instances, but ONLY when your faction has defeated the other to control the zone. Its kind of like the Spirit Shards from Terrokar. You get them from Auchindon instances, but only when your faction has won control of the Spirit Towers.
Personally, as I got sick of PVPing, I am using my shards to get me a free mount. Black war saber is getting a little tired, and I cant afford to make my Mekengineers Chopper yet.
It took me three days of casual heroics to get the 300 for the mount. If it takes you a few weeks youre probably doing something wrong. No offense.
