New Jersey Women's Amateur: A look at the tournament
The first week of August usually means two things in New Jersey: hot temperatures and the Women’s Amateur. This week at Hackensack Golf Club in Oradell, 59 of the state’s best women amateur players will descend on the historic Walter Travis-designed club to try to survive one of the toughest tests in local golf — one day of 18-hole stroke play, followed by two days of match play. Then it’s a 36-hole match to determine the champion. Who will come out on top? Here’s our breakdown:
THE COURSE
Tucked away in suburban Bergen County, Hackensack Golf Club has been baffling golfers for more than 110 years. This classic Charles Banks-designed layout tests every club in the bag and provides players with a multitude of different shot options. While players might be intimidated by its tight, tree-lined layout, those who’ve successfully navigated their way around Hackensack say that it’s all about placing your shot. That’s what the field of the best women’s amateurs in the state will have to do this week.
KEY HOLE Talk about a punch in the mouth right off the bat. After two difficult beginning holes, the field gets another dose of reality with this monster of a par-3, modeled after the famous Biarritz holes. With a giant swale in the middle of the green, placement will be critically important here. Wayward tee shots will almost assuredly find one of the four bunkers which bracket both sides of the green. When all is said and done this week, par will be considered a good score here.
THE FAVORITE
Crystal Lee (Darlington)
Could it be more of a home-field advantage for the sophomore-to-be at Lehigh? A dominating force during her four years with Mahwah High School (20 minutes north of Hackensack), Lee made Bergen County her own personal golfing playground. She was a three-time county champion in high school, in addition to racking up other wins like the Red Devil Invitational in her senior year. A former first-team Star-Ledger all-state selection, Lee was bounced in the first round of match play at last year’s championship, one year after making it to the semifinals.
THE CHALLENGERS
Scotland Preston (Echo Lake) How could the list of challengers not begin with the defending NJSIAA Girls Champion? The senior-to-be at Governor Livingston edged out Taylor Totland in May at Bamm Hollow Country Club to claim the title. The daughter of longtime Echo Lake Country Club head pro Mike Preston, made it to the second round of match play last year before losing to eventual champion Kuriko Tsukiyama, 8&6. Plus, she’s named after the birthplace of golf — how can you go wrong?
