Under the "Remake/Remodel" project, four young, London-based Thai designers have re-interpreted the national textile out of its traditional context, making it relevant to the contemporary fashion world.
The four _ Sorada "Too" Thaiwaranon, Thatwasin "Boat" Khajeenikorn, Pun Sarasas and Rudi Joti _ will launch their works, three ready-to-wear collections and one accessories collection, at a fashion show tomorrow evening at the Serpentine Pavilion in London's Hyde Park.
Thailand commercial attache Adisai Dhummakupt said the project was formulated last year when he learned from representatives of the SUPPORT Foundation that there were a large number of silk and handwoven textiles kept in the foundation's storage room. The textiles are those presented to, or purchased from villagers by, Her Majesty the Queen during her upcountry trips over the past decades.
Then, he sought out young Thai designers, all in their mid-20s, for the project and came across the four talents.
"Each possesses a prominent portfolio, completing their studies at prestigious fashion schools and taking internships with famous fashion houses. It's interesting how they will transform the textiles into something new and contemporary," he said.
The young designers flew back to Thailand to hand-pick their fabrics for the project from the foundation's storage house in Bang Sai.
Even though the four have worked on the same project, they are determined to maintain their individual styles.
For example, Sorada has stuck to minimalism. "My style is minimal and graphic with strong emphasis on construction techniques and finishings," she said. "Basically, it turns out as a collage work, with a raw edge."
Working with silk is a challenge.
At first, the designers just roughly looked at the fabrics and brought them home, only to realise later that the pattern in the same fabric can be asymmetric or even different. A similar problem is found in coloured silk, where the hue in the fabric can be inconsistent and slightly distorted. So they had to go back to the storage house and make sure they saw the whole fabric before taking it home.
However, Boat said the asymmetric patterns gave him a chance to play with new ideas.
A graduate of London College of Fashion's master degree programme with a menswear major, Boat said he wanted to completely change the conventional idea about Thai silk that it is a "mature" fabric.
