Movie in the Park: Food, Family Fun and 'Footloose' Tonight at Salmon Brook

It's time to cut "footloose" for some family fun tonight in Granby.

The Granby Parks and Recreation Department is sponsoring its 21st Annual "Movies in the Park" celebration this evening at Salmon Brook Park beginning at 5 p.m.

Addmission to the event is free, although donations will be accepted.

There will be no shortage of food and refreshements. Members of the local American Legion Connecticut Post 182 serving their "famous" hot dogs, hamburgers and sausage grinders, as well as Granby Lions’ Club members slicing up fresh servings of pizza.

The Snack Shack will have frozen items and candy on hand. And beginning at 7:30 p.m., members of the Park & Recreation Board will once again serve up their "famous" ice cream sundaes — free.

And what movie night is complete without popcorn? So, popcorn and glow sticks will be available for show time.

Pre-show events tonight include Late Nite at the Pond with activities for the kids.

Children's musician Dave Fry will be on stage to entertain the younger generation at 5 p.m. Fry has appeared on PBS-TV and released CDs such as "I Like Peanut Butter."

Starting at 6:30 p.m., local Granby favorites Evolution take to the live stage to perform a mix of 60s and 70s rock and blues favorites.

Then, at dusk, the main event will begin: the classic 1980s musical film "Footloose." The movie centers around the story of a small, mid-western town where dancing has been banned, until a city kid (played by actor Kevin Bacon) moves in and leads a crusade to force the town elders to allow a high school prom to take place.

Residents are invited to bring their lawn chairs, blankets and flashlights.

Tonight's celebration will be held rain or shine. In the event of rain, the festivities will be held at Pilgrim Covenant Church, 605 Salmon Brook Street, in Granby.
