Brown wins FRAM Autolite NHRA Nationals
SONOMA — Antron Brown came out on top for the third time this season in an all Don Schumacher Racing Top Fuel Dragster final round, by defeating teammate Tony Schumacher in the FRAM Autolite NHRA Nationals at Infineon Raceway in Sonoma on Sunday. This is Brown's 12th win in 25 final round appearances in a Top Fuel Dragster.
Brown was happy to win, and also very happy to beat Al-Anabi driver Del Worsham in the semi-final round.
“The Al-Anabi cars have been kicking my butt for two or three years now,” Brown said. “I woke up today and felt energized, kind of like how it was in 2009 (when I won here). You have to go out and race and that’s what we did.”
Brown now sits in third place in the standings and clinched a spot in the Countdown to the Championship with the win.
In all, six track records were broken over the race weekend, including speed and elapsed time in Funny Car (John Force) and Pro Stock (Allen Johnson). Hector Arana III also broke the elapsed-time record in Pro Stock Motorcycle, and Schumacher broke the speed record for Top Fuel.
Schumacher Racing scored again when Funny Car driver Ron Capps defeated Tim Wilkerson in the Funny Car final round with a pass at 4.145 elapsed time at 303.57 mph. Sonoma marked Capp's 32nd career win, and his second consecutive Funny Car championship in Sonoma.
Capps knew coming in to Sonoma that he had a great car, but worried every round that something would go wrong. Infineon Raceway is Capp's home track, so he had plenty of family, friends and sponsors to cheer him on.
“I knew coming in we had a good car but you never know what’s going to happen,” Capps said. “I never take anything for granted.”
Greg Anderson became the all-time winningest Pro Stock driver in Sonoma with his fourth-career victory at Infineon Raceway on Sunday. He defeated Mike Edwards in the finals with a run of 6.562 (210.28). Edwards ran a 6.576 (210.14). With the win, Anderson clinched a spot in the Countdown to the Championship. He is the defending and four-time Pro Stock champion.
“To come out on top is just a great feeling. There’s something about Sonoma, it’s just magical for me,” Anderson said.
LE Tonglet beat Michael Phillips to become the Pro Stock Motorcycle champion on Sunday with a run of 7.001 et at 189.76 mph. This is Tonglet's third win of the season and he is the reigning Pro Stock Motorcycle world champion. Runner-up Phillips won the event at Infineon in 2010.

August qualified no. 14 with a 3.996 at 304.39 mph, but ran into trouble during his race against Brown. Shortly after the cars launched, The Synergyn Fuel Additives dragster lost traction and threw a blower belt, slowing August to a 4.760 at only 158.07 mph to Brown's winning 3.836 at 318.77 mph.
"We made it into the show, I was comfortable driving the car, and our sponsors got some great exposure," August said. "The free samples of Synergyn in the midway were very popular, and Mike Lescure had several of his customers at the race. This weekend was really about showing our sponsors how powerful NHRA drag racing is as a marketing tool, and I think we achieved that."
This was the first time August has driven for Dexter Tuttle's team, a group who finished in the top 10 in 2010.
"These guys are really calm and it made me very comfortable in the car," August said. "Everyone is very professional and I know everything is taken care of when we go to the starting line. Of course we also wanted to go rounds, but other than that this was the best time I've ever had driving a fuel car. I can't wait to do it again.
