HSS, hot coil tags tumble, seamless surges

Hollow structural sections (HSS) and welded mechanical tubing prices have swooned over the past two weeks as flat-rolled steel prices continue their summer tumble, market sources said. At the same, a clutch of cold-drawn seamless mechanical mills have announced price hikes in a market that remains characterized by relatively firm demand and long lead times.

Popular sizes of HSS are now in the range of $950 to $970 per ton ($47.50 to $48.50 per hundredweight), with more common sizes of ASTM 513 fetching a premium of some $20 to $40 per ton ($1 to $2 per cwt), market sources said.

Big HSS buys, perhaps isolated and not characteristic of the overall market, were reported at lower numbers—some as low as $900 to $930 per ton...
