Town of Hempstead Silent As Marriage Equality Law Comes Closer
Steve Anchin, Democratic Candidate for Clerk Demands Equality for All
On July 24, 2011 New York State will officially recognize same sex marriage, a historical day that marks equality for all. Towns across the state have been making arraignments for couples entering into their nuptials with the exception of the Town of Hempstead. Hempstead, which has a population nearing 1 million people, has been silent and has not prepared anything for same sex couples.
The marriage section of the Town Clerk’s Office’s website continues to refers only to “the bride and groom” without any indication that the law has changed and a couple may be of the same sex.
“Marriage is a right and the Town has a responsibility to serve its entire population, and their needs,” stated Steve Anchin, Democratic Candidate for Town Clerk. “Town officials have been silent with regards to real equality, and I am astounded and disappointed that they have made no arrangements for same gender residents who will be getting their marriage license.”
Current Town Clerk Mark Bonilla has not indicated if he will honor the law, but District Attorney Rice has distributed a letter to all Nassau County clerks informing them that legal action may be taken if a municipality refuses to provide a marriage license to a same sex couple.
“It is not within the scope of the office of the Town Clerk to sit in moral judgment on this new law that legalizes same sex marriage,” stated Anchin. “In New York State same sex marriage is an extension of American civil rights, just as the Civil Rights Law enacted on July 2, 1964 - landmark legislation that outlawed major forms of discrimination against blacks and women, including racial segregation - and the 19th Amendment that extended voting rights to women.”
Unlike other Towns in New York, the Town of Hempstead Town Clerk’s Office has declined to open its doors on Sunday, the day the law takes effect.
Steve Anchin, the Democratic and Working Families parties candidate for Hempstead Town Clerk, is advocating for real change and 21st Century technological advancement in the Town so as to streamline government while making its services more accessible to and convenient for Town residents. He is a Hewlett resident who is married with two children and two grandchildren.
