She first became interested learning to ballroom in 2004 when she saw some of her friends having so much fun with it. She later pursued group lessons at USA Dance, an organization that teaches ballroom dancing for both social and competition purposes.

Shrieves said, “I started dancing much too late in life to become a champion dancer, but I certainly can improve and have a lot of fun doing it, as well as meeting some wonderful people along the way.”

One very important person that she’s met along the way is her dance partner, Edwin Fleischmann of Metairie, who she met in her group dance class. The two became partners when he decided to try competitive dancing and asked if she would partner with him for lessons and competition.

Shrieves and Fleischmann are serious about the dance competitions and have been taking private lessons with Stela Howard and her son, Stephan Howard, at Starlight Ballroom in Metairie for several years.

They compete at the USA Dance Gumbo of Ballroom national qualifying event held in Baton Rouge each June. They relish the opportunity to be inspired and to get an up-close and personal look at the national amateur champions who compete at the event to earn points to qualify for national competitions.

Shrieves is involved in the local chapter of USA Dance and has served on the board of directors for the past six years. She said that Chapter 5031 of the organization is promoting ballroom dance for youngsters who participate in the Jefferson Parish Public School System’s ballroom dance program. This past June, the organization sent 17 school-age couples from the program to compete in Gumbo of Ballroom.

Shrieves said, “Ballroom dance is on a path to become an Olympic sport in the future.” She then added, “Our national organization is a member of the United States Olympic Committee.”

Shrieves said that unlike many other sports, ballroom dancing is an activity that can be continued throughout life. She said it is great exercise, a social activity and small-team sport.

Shrieves said, “All you need is a leader and a follower to become a team.

“You can also be a member of a larger team. You can learn at any age.”

Though she said starting the sport as early as possible is best if competition is your goal, “It is never too late to enjoy oneself.
