Former Marksville-LC star named coach at Grant

DRY PRONG -- Daniel Greenhouse is not worried about his first coaching job.

The 24-year-old has been named the boys basketball coach at Grant High School.

Greenhouse replaces Lance Brasher who stepped down as Grant coach in April to take the same position at Tioga.

The former Peabody and Louisiana-Monroe star compiled a 50-38 record in his three seasons at Grant, leading the Cougars to two playoff appearances.

"I think I lost the whole getting nervous part after my freshman year in college," said Greenhouse, who played under Duke Algood in high school and Gene Rushing in college.

Greenhouse made a name for himself on the area basketball scene while at Marksville High School.

He earned all-district honors as a senior and helped lead the team to a 33-4 record and their first Top 28 appearance.

That team, coached by Algood, upset Amite in semifinals before losing to Richwood in the Class 3A championship game.

Greenhouse went on to play for Rushing at LC. As a senior he averaged 7.8 points and 2.1 rebounds a game while leading the team with 44 3-pointers.

In the spring of 2010, Greenhouse graduated with a bachelor's degree in Health and Physical Education.

"I'm really happy for him," said Rushing, who recommended Greenhouse apply for the position.

"He's just a very good person and of course he worked very hard for me as a player. He will work his players diligently every practice to reach their potential and will do a very good job in the classroom."

"I just view it as chance to help some kids," Greenhouse said. "I have been around the game for a very long time and maybe these kids can pick up some of things that I have learned over the years."

BUNKIE -- Morey Skluzacek has stepped down as boys basketball coach at Bunkie High School.

Skluzacek has decided to take a position teaching at Tioga Elementary while serving as an assistant under new Tioga High coach Lance Brasher. Skluzacek made the decision to spend more time with his family.

"I was very hesitant to make the move at first," Skluzacek said who was a former basketball star at Holy Savior Menard and Louisiana College.

"But I live in Pineville and I knew eventually that I would be teaching or coaching in Rapides Parish. This gives me that opportunity to be closer to my family."

Skluzacek went 24-29 (12-12) in his two seasons with the Panthers. The team reached the postseason once, losing 54-46 to Crowley in the opening round of last season's Class 3A playoffs.

It isn’t hard for many good collegiate basketball players to go under the radar. With 346 Division I college basketball teams around the nation, it’s nearly impossible for a fan to get a glimpse of every team around the country each year.

Some players go without notice due in large part because they are playing with a star on their team. Playing with a star player and a high volume score can certainly take away recognition from the best of players.

I will run down some of the nation’s best players who most people have never heard of. I recommend taking notes because most of the players are going to have very good seasons, and you will be smart to catch as many of these guys as you can in the 2011-2012 season.
