Mighty battlegrounds in Penang, Perak
IT COULD have been apt that Keshas hit song Tick Tock with the lyrics Tick tock on the clock but the party wont stop was blasting from the speakers during the RHB- The Star Mighty Minds Penang state challenge recently, except that it wasnt a party.
It was more like a combat zone at the 1st Avenue Mall Penang where the students battled each other in three rounds of challenges multiple-choice questions, hands-on challenge and buzzer quiz.
The unanimous chorus among the students was that the hands-on challenge was the toughest nut to crack among the three rounds.
Using basic household items like plastic bottles and cups, toothpicks, ice cream sticks, plasticine, sticky tape and straws, the young MacGyvers (a character from a famous 1990s television show by the same name), really proved their creativity and innovative skills in the 90-minute challenge.
Among the interesting models were SMK Penang Frees spider water slide.
Team leader Emmanuel Leong said the students worked till the very last second to complete the challenge.
In most water theme parks, the slide is the main attraction so we thought of a way to make ours stable and attractive with LED (light-emitting diode) lights for the spiders eyes. The spiders eight-legs gave the slide stability, he explained.
After almost eight hours of gruelling mind puzzles, the SMJK Chung Ling team comprising fourth formers Lim Jian Hong, Ivan Ang Jie Xiong and Choon Zi Yang were announced the upper secondary Penang state challenge champions.
They beat SMK (P) St George and SMJK Chung Hwa Confucian, which came in second and third respectively.
SMK Penang Free emerged first in the lower secondary category followed by SMK (P) St George and SMK Bukit Jambul.
The Penang Free team was powered by 15-year-olds Emmanuel Leong, Ooi Boon Hao and Jonathan Ho.
Team leader Leong said the questions were challenging and required a lot of thinking.
If it were easy, the difference of scores between the teams wouldnt be so close. It certainly made the competition more exciting, he added.
The team members attributed their success to their efforts in reading and researching on the Internet.
Similarly, the hands-on challenge proved to be the most difficult obstacle for students at the RHB-The Star Mighty Minds Perak challenge held at Ipoh Parade last week.
They racked their brains to construct a model based on scientific and mathematical concepts an automated flag raising system to simultaneously raise flags at a Sports Day event for the lower secondary category; and a visored-helmet fitted with wipers for the upper secondary category.
