• Barbara-Jean DeLoria has been named Senior Vice President of Commercial and Retail Lending. She has been with United since 1989, most recently serving as a senior vice president and commercial lending officer. She also has overall responsibility for the bank’s consumer lending department. In her new role, DeLoria will remain based at the bank’s corporate headquarters in West Springfield and will maintain her commercial-lending portfolio, in addition to her new responsibility for managing the bank’s retail lending division, which includes consumer and residential lending. DeLoria is treasurer of the Affiliated Chamber of Commerce of Greater Springfield and serves on the Professional Women’s Chamber. She also serves on boards for the Weston Rehabilitation Center for Women, the Massachusetts Small Business Review Board, and Springfield Rifles Hockey Inc. She is a teacher for the Center of Financial Training (CFT) and president of Dress for Success of Western Mass.; and has been hired as Assistant Vice President and Residential Lending Sales Manager. She is a new addition to the United Bank team, bringing with her decades of experience in mortgage financing in the Greater Springfield area. As the assistant vice president and residential lending sales manager based at the bank’s corporate headquarters in West Springfield, Parzychowski is responsible for managing the residential-lending team of originators, as well as residential-mortgage business development. Parzychowski joins the bank from Mortgage Master in West Springfield, where she served as senior loan officer, a position she had also held previously with Family Choice Mortgage Corp. in West Springfield. She serves as chair of the Board of Directors for the Agawam Small Business Assistance Center, is immediate past president of the West Springfield/Agawam Kiwanis Club, and is active in several charitable organizations. Attorney Susan Fentin, a partner with Skoler, Abbott & Presser, P.C., will be a key speaker at the 2011 Advanced Employment Issues Symposium in Nashville, Tenn. on Oct. 6 and 7. Fentin will be part of the keynote panel that will begin the symposium and will be speaking on independent contractor misclassification, a topic of significance for employers in Massachusetts and elsewhere in the U.S. • Jamie Kelliher has joined the firm.

Expert motorcycle safety tips and recommendations, part 2 ...

In the previous post we discussed a recent meeting which was held to bring safety experts from all over the world together in an effort to improve traffic safety and reduce the motorcycle accident rate throughout the country. The experts all agreed that additional education and licensing requirements could aid in the process.

However, since many motorcycle accidents involve errors made by other drivers, the experts made numerous safety recommendations aimed at increasing motorcycle riders' defensive driving skills. Some of those suggestions included the following:

Dirt training for beginning riders: Dirt training allows new riders to experiment with different driving techniques and maneuvers within a close track. Additionally, rider errors that are made on a dirt track tend to be less severe than those made on the roadway since the dirt absorbs much of the impact. Annual "spring tune-up" training: The experts recommended that all drivers get an hour or two of riding practice and tune up skills at the beginning of each new riding season to make sure that they are road-ready. Understand how your bike operates: The experts pointed out that there is very little focus on educating new drivers on the mechanical aspects of their motorcycles. Research suggests that riders who understand how their bikes work tend to be better defensive drivers when they are out on the road. Engage in track and racer training programs: Engaging in these types of programs and activities conditions riders to be much more precise and alert when handling their bikes, especially at higher rates of speed.

Essentially, riders who choose to take additional precautions and engage in optional rider safety programs will have an advantage when it comes to defensive driving on the highway and successfully operating their motorcycles.
