Hancher receives UTMB honor

A Columbus doctor has received a prestigious honor from his alma mater.

Thomas B. Hancher was one of four Texas physicians recently honored with The University of Texas Medical Branch Ashbel Smith Distinguished Alumnus Award. The other winners were Charles W. “Bill” Bailey, Edward V. Hannigan and Bernard F. Morrey.

The award is considered by UTMB to be the highest honor bestowed by the Galveston university’s School of Medicine Alumni Association. Winners of the award are chosen based on what is judged to be outstanding service in the medical profession and service to humanity.

The award is named after Dr. Ashbel Smith, a figure in Texas medicine, politics and education. According to UTMB, Smith was instrumental in establishing the University of Texas at Austin in 1881 and, in 1891, a medical department in Galveston that would become UTMB.

Hancher was raised in Columbus and graduated from high school in 1964. He received a Bachelor of Arts degree with honors from The University of Texas in Austin and was a member of Phi Eta Sigma and Phi Beta Kappa.

The UT graduate moved on to complete his medicine internship at Indiana University and his residency in internal medicine at The University of Texas Health Science Center at San Antonio. In 1976, Hancher started his practice of board certified internal medicine and what eventually included geriatrics.

When he wasn’t wearing a white jacket, Hancher served on the Columbus ISD board of trustees 1981 through 1984. He was elected mayor of Columbus in May 1995 and served in that capacity until 1999. Other hats included being directors of the Columbus Quincentennial Commission and Columbus State Bank.

In contributions to medicine outside the doctor’s office, Hancher served the Colorado-Fayette County Medical Society as a member of Texas Medical Association’s house of delegates. He served as vice speaker of TMA’s house of delegates, speaker of the house, a member of the TMA board of trustees and was president of TMA from 2001 to 2002. Hancher continues to be a fellow of the American College of Physicians- American Society of Internal Medicine and a member of the Texas Academy of Internal Medicine and the American Geriatrics Society. He received the Colorado County Economical Development Corporate Award of Excellence in 1999.

Hancher was married for 36 years to Christine Garrison, who passed away in 2010. He has three children, Heather, Shannon and Blake. Shannon graduated from UTMB as well and is an anesthesiologist at St. Luke’s Hospital in Houston. Heather is a homemaker in Katy, while Blake is employed by Oil Well Varco in Houston. Hancher also has three grandchildren.
