Why the new love of my life is…my natural afro textured hair!
There are times when we look back at our lives and wonder why we let a good thing get away! It was a match made in heaven, but at the time there was no interest on our part. Yet as the years pass and age brings wisdom – we realise we made a dreadful mistake!
And so it was with my hair – my natural afro textured hair. In my defence it has to be said that growing up in the sixties as the youngest child with my only brother the next closest in age to me at three years older – he was my playmate and I was a tomboy!
I did not care for girlish pursuits. I was always chided for the rough treatment I gave the dolls I was bought, but mostly for the fact that despite my mother combing my hair into a neat style every morning, by the time I got home from school my hair was sticking up in all directions!
I even remember the disappointment of my mother when I once presented her with a photo taken at school in which a centre plait that had been pinned down with a hairclip was sticking straight up in the air! I thought it was funny but my mother was not amused.
Things went from bad to worse when my brother accused me of being ‘girly’ a term I hated, and so to prove I was just as tough as him, I took a pair of scissors and cut one of my plaits clean off! My mother was horrified!
So my natural afro textured hair did not get much love from me and was severely neglected in my early years. Occasionally I would be subjected to the hot comb and the Blue Pressing Oil – a thick Vaseline-like substance that straightened the hair and gave it a glossy shine.
For me it was all too much bother this hair business. Getting one’s hair combed and styled by my mother or elder sister was a nightmare – the hair was always thick, tangled and full of knots and as a child it was hard to sit still. Getting a gentle chop on the head with the comb was a signal to stop wriggling around and forced submission.
As soon as I turned sixteen I was having no more of it and had my hair relaxed (chemically straightened) and life became so much easier. A few years later I discovered the weave (hair extensions) and instantly there was a compelling reason, and excuse not to have to do anything to take care of my hair.

Fox Network insisted that she continue to wear the wig, which she refused to do. And Republican congresswoman Cynthia McKinney, who has worn her hair in braids and natural styles was once said to resemble “a ghetto slut” by white radio show host Neal

However, I still could not get my head around the idea of being an outcast by having to wear a wig or natural hair styles such as cane row, braids and Bantu knots. These were all hairstyles that I had to adapt to wearing during the start of my journey

It is put on by either special transparent glue or tape. A lace front is lace only in the front of your hairline where your forehead is, ear to ear. A Full lace is lace all around your hairline front and back. The lace is glued or taped to your skin, and it is SAFE. This lace sticks out about 1 or 2 inches out of hairline and you glue it one, and it dissapears magically where no one can tell you are wearing a wig.
The reason why Beyonce, Tyra Banks, Oprah ect wears them is because these wigs are hand tied and looks more natural than just a wig that old white women wear. Thats why its so expensive compared to a regular wig which cost under $ 50. You could swim, shower, exercise, tie in a high or low pony tail, ect…its great.
I wear one myself, and my hair is 16 inches long naturally. I want thickness and more length thats why.
