Man was taking photos when he fell and drowned in Scarborough

Jeyakanthan Navaratsingam died because of his love of photography.

He was taking pictures at the edge of Highland Creek at 3 p.m. Wednesday when he slipped and fell, hitting his head.

Police say Navaratsingam, 34, got up and walked around before falling into the creek. His body disappeared into the deep water near the man-made waterfall, making it nearly impossible for his wife to rescue him.

She called 911 and it took five officers to get him out of the water.

Navaratsingam had no vital signs and was pronounced dead across road at Scarborough Hospital.

Friends say Navaratsingam could swim and police are investigating the circumstances of his death.

Later in the day, tears rolled down Nitharshan Elansooryanathan’s face when he saw his cousin’s lone blue sandal at the edge of the creek. The 21-year old man said they were close enough to be brothers.

“He took care of me, called me to make sure where I was . . . made me come home at 10 p.m.,” he said.

They lived together for a year in Navaratsingam’s apartment on Lawrence Ave. E., overlooking the creek. Elansooryanathan only moved out on Tuesday.

“If I had been here I could have saved him,” he said, his face on the shoulder of a close friend.

“He loved taking pictures of wildlife,” Elansooryanathan added. It was a new passion. They came down to the creek almost every day, taking pictures of birds. Sometimes they fished.

They always brought Buffy, Navratsingam’s white puppy, named for the vampire slayer.

“He didn’t have kids,” said Elansooryanathan. “He loved Buffy like a daughter.”

Children may have been next. “He got married less than a year ago,” friends said, adding it was a civil ceremony with a Hindu wedding planned for later this year. Navaratsingam’s wife is devastated.

“He was an amazing guy,” said a friend, one of a group of four who went to Albert Campbell high school in Scarborough with Navaratsingam.

They, too, call him brother.

Navaratsingam leaves behind his mother, a younger sister and a large extended family. An elder brother passed away in 2007.

Many friends gathered at the creek’s edge, hugging each other, tears falling onto the grass where Navaratsingam strode just hours before.

“I keep expecting him to come walking down here, right now (saying) ‘What are you guys doing, man?’ ” said one friend.
